Five Positioning Rules That Survive the Next Patch
Image: SummonerTactics
A copied formation is already missing the most important information: who you are likely to fight. Patches change units and damage values, but five positioning principles keep working.
1. Buy time with distance
Every tile changes how long an attacker travels, when a defender is reached, and which unit is targeted first. Protect a damage dealer by making threats spend time crossing bodies or space.
2. Spread against area damage
If one ability can hit the entire formation, adjacency has become a liability. Separate high-value units while preserving the protection each still needs.
3. Clump for shared protection
Against isolated divers or when a shield, heal, or aura rewards proximity, the opposite rule applies. Formation is a response, not a moral preference.
4. Use bait intentionally
A disposable or durable unit can pull an assassin, spell, or targeting rule away from the carry. Bait succeeds only when you know what selects the target; otherwise it is merely a sacrifice.
5. Protect the second threat
Opponents scout the obvious carry. A second damage source on another angle makes one counter-position insufficient. Redundancy turns a solved formation into a decision.
The pre-fight scan
Before moving anything, inspect likely opponents for:
- first-contact threat;
- largest area effect;
- backline access;
- crowd-control direction;
- target-selection rule; and
- whether your last formation was already observed.
Move the fewest units necessary to answer the strongest risk. Excessive last-second shuffling often breaks your own protection faster than it outsmarts the opponent.
Review the opening seconds
When the fight ends, ignore the final survivor at first. Rewatch who was targeted, where units walked, which ability landed first, and whether a protected unit spent time attacking. The opening geometry explains more than the result screen.
